Resources SAVED by recycling: climate protection in black and white
We work together with our customers to conserve precious resources and protect the climate. The renowned Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Security and Energy Technology (UMSICHT) regularly uses figures to prove the positive effects of the Interzero mission.
Our annual study “resources SAVED by recycling” shows how recycling takes a benefits the environment and makes an important contribution to the supply of raw materials. The impressive figures help to explain the benefits of recycling and underline the importance of circular economy transformation. In cooperation with Fraunhofer UMSICHT, we therefore prepare a comprehensive life cycle assessment every year and accurate estimates of resource and greenhouse gas emissions savings.
According to this, Interzero has saved over 12.5 million tonnes of primary raw materials by recycling around 1.8 million tonnes of materials in Germany, Austria, Poland, Italy, Croatia and Slovenia in 2021 alone. At the same time, around 1 million tonnes of greenhouse gases could be saved.
“From designing recyclable products to sustainable use: for a successful circular transformation, everyone involved in the value chain must work together.”
Dr. Ing. Markus Hiebel
Head of Sustainability and Resource Management Fraunhofer-Institut UMSICHT

"resources SAVED"- Certificates for our customers and partners
Sustainable competitive advantage: by working with Interzero, you improve your ecological footprint and strengthen your bond with your customers. We show you the amount of primary raw materials and greenhouse gases you have saved with us in your individual “resources SAVED” certificate.
Transparency is not only a core value for us, it is also highly valued by our customers and partners. As a longterm partner, the Bag Company is committed to a successful cooperation. “Interzero’s ‘resources SAVED’ certification reflects our contribution to climate protection,” says Roland Gartner, Managing Director of The Bag Company, a specialist and market leader in point-of-sale packaging that has been producing and delivering all packaging in a climate-neutral way since 2017. “It is an important piece of the puzzle that contributes to the success of our business activities and is therefore an essential part of our sustainability documentation.”

Record keeping
Help with record-keeping
Interzero assists you in setting up a system to keep records of the products you place on the market as an obliged person.
As full capture of a large number of different products leads to a disproportionate amount of work and costs, we have worked with Interzero in Austria to develop a random sampling method that allows companies to calculate the weight of packaging placed on the market in a simplified way. In Austria, the method has been approved by the competent Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and the Environment.
The random sampling method assesses the total packaging placed on the market, based on a set number and schedule of random samples according to the inspection period (annual or quarterly). The random sampling method does not identify the exact quantities of packaging waste placed on the market in the Republic of Slovenia, as it is a statistical method. The random sampling method is carried out by Interzero.
We also offer to carry out the entire waste products activity, freeing you from work that is not related to your company’s operations (External Activity Management).

Registration in official records
Registration in official records
Registration in the register of the Slovenian Environment Agency (ARSO)
Manufacturers, buyers and importers of electrical and electronic equipment, batteries and accumulators must register with the Slovenian Environment Agency when they first import products.
Interzero helps you during registration process. The Environment Agency issues an order for an indefinite period.
Amendments to decisions of the Slovenian Environment Agency (ARSO)
The manufacturer must notify the Ministry of the cessation of activities or changes such as: change of company, registered office, registration and tax number, change of class and type of electrical and electronic equipment, change of sales technique and fulfilment of any obligations of the manufacturer within 30 days of the change.
Interzero manages the application process in accordance with the applicable data in our reporting records.
Registration in the register of the Financial Administration of the Republic of Slovenia (FURS)
Every manufacturer or buyer of electrical and electronic equipment and every packer, producer or buyer of packaging or packaged goods entering the Slovenian market for the first time is required to register its business with the Tax Office and to notify the Tax Office of any change in its activities. Their registration is subject to payment of environmental charges at the end of each quarter or every six months.
Interzero keeps a record of all the products presented on the market for our clients, so that they can prepare all the necessary documents for registration with the FURS. We review with our new customers the foreseen procedures for dealing with future products and arrange the relevant documentation accordingly.
SELF-DECLARATION FURS
Every three or six months, environmental levy payers must calculate and pay the environmental duty on the products they place on the Slovenian market, namely packaging, electrical and electronic equipment, batteries and grave candles. Obliged persons who do not fulfil their obligations to the FURS for previous periods are required to self-declare their activity and to account for the environmental taxes for previous periods. When self-declaring, the company must complete all reports to the tax office and account for late payment interest.
Interzero can prepare all the documentation for the self-declaration and calculation of environmental taxes to be submitted to the FURS for the following products:
- packaging waste;
- waste grave candles;
- waste electrical and electronic equipment; and
- waste portable batteries and accumulators.

Check for recycling
CHECK FOR RECYCLING
Would you like to make your packaging more sustainable?
Recycling is an effective way of conserving natural resources and a way of integrating waste materials into the circular economy. If single-use plastics are not reduced, it is predicted that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish. Closing the material loop requires knowledge of the correct separate waste collection process. For example, bottles made from recycled PET material have become a textbook example of recycling in the packaging industry.
With the “Check for Recycling” recyclability check, Interzero brings sustainable strategic packaging measures to the Slovenian market.
Check the recyclability of your product packaging and get the “Check for Recycling” label, which will make you one of the companies that manage their packaging sustainably.
We analyse the recyclability of your packaging with a software tool to identify collection, sorting and recovery options. Based on good input data, you can get a quick estimate of the recyclability of your packaging.
If your packaging has achieved a high recyclability rating, you will be awarded a “Check for recycling” certificate. Otherwise, we can give you expert guidance on how to improve your packaging.
The service is aimed at suppliers and companies that place packaging or products on the market in their own packaging.
For more information on the service and the recyclability checking process, please contact our experts.

History - key milestones
1991: The Group is launched. The first company initially focused on improving the recycling of packaging waste. Interzero then began to expand its offering as a global provider of integrated environmental services, setting global standards in waste prevention, high-tech sorting and innovative recycling solutions.
1997: Interzero’s service business starts to expand to other countries with the establishment of an Austrian subsidiary and system operator – Interzero Austria GmbH. Further expansions to other European countries will take place in the coming years.
2000: With the Repasack solution, Interzero offers a unique pan-European system for the collection and recycling of paper bags. The company has become involved in environmental education with its award-winning Eco Dragon project, a project to collect empty printer cartridges in schools and kindergartens.
2005: Interzero launches a service for the collection of disposable beverage packaging waste. Today, we operate one mobile centre and ten stationary packaging counting centres.
2006: Interzero becomes the first company on the market to receive a state licence for recycling services under the German dual system. With the competitiveness created in the market, the company has managed to significantly increase the recycling rate of packaging waste.
2007: the year of RTE pooling: Interzero launches an innovative pooling solution for transit packaging.
2008: Interzero joins the ALBA Group, a recycling specialist and raw material supplier, adding the Group’s concentrated expertise to its offering.
2009: closed-loop recycling of plastics: Interzero develops Recycled-Resource, an award-winning process for recycling plastics.
2011: the Baumarkt paint bucket is the first product on the market made of Procyclen, a recycled plastic material developed by Interzero. The material used for the bucket is almost 100% made from plastic waste collected in various German recycling schemes.
2013: Interzero publishes its first Sustainability Report, which details how the company systematically designs both its processes and its projects for clients to be both ecologically and socially oriented. The report presents key changes and data from 2010 to 2012 and is in line with the internationally applicable Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines.
2015: Interzero increases its communication on sustainability and launches an annual sustainability magazine. The publication, edited by journalists, presents examples of best practice in sustainability within Interzero and with its customers.
2016: 25th Interzero celebration anniversary of its successful operation. Thanks to the trust of their domestic and international business partners, they have so far returned more than 15 million tonnes of used packaging to the raw material cycle, saving valuable primary resources. A new plastics recycling centre is opened in Maribor, Slovenia, and Encory, a company active in the reuse and recovery of automotive parts, is founded, in which the BMW and ALBA Groups each have a 50% stake.
2017: brandused.com online shop becomes active: used, refurbished IT equipment or new, unused technical products from company or warehouse sales are sold to end customers to give the equipment a second life cycle.
2018: the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT has now for 11th year demonstrated the positive effects of the recyclable materials chain in successive years. In addition, from 2018, companies can optimise the recyclability of packaging based on the new science-based “Made for Recycling” method. In addition, a joint venture between Interzero and Saubermacher AG, SIMPLi RETURN GmbH , was set up in 2018, the first system for the collection and recycling of lithium-ion batteries.
2019: In time for the entry into force of the German Packaging Act, 1. January 2019: Following the successful launch of the Lizenzero online packaging licensing shop in summer 2018, Dual System Interzero (DSI) is now available to packaging distributors of all sizes, with customised solutions.
Interzero is also expanding its service offering internationally and is present with its environmental services in Austria, Slovenia, Poland , Croatia, the Czech Republic and Italy.
2022: Interzero opens another environmental services company in Serbia.

In October 2022, the SUP Regulation entered into force. Directive (EU) 2019/904 on reducing the environmental impact of certain plastic products, which imposes obligations on producers of single-use plastic products to reduce the environmental impact of this packaging.
The primary purpose of the SUP Regulation is to reduce the pollution of the environment by waste from these products and to ensure their rational design and use. The Regulation also obliges producers to raise consumer awareness about the use of alternative products and the environmental impacts of littering with SUP products. Awareness-raising should be carried out at least once a year, for example through appropriate publicity campaigns, etc.
At Interzero, as the holder of the licensing system for SUP products, we enable you to manage all the legal obligations set out in the Directive. By entering into a contract with us, we will be able to fulfil the obligations under the Extended Producer’s Responsibility (EPR) on your behalf.
